Oscars 2015 — Animated Feature

How to Train Your Dragon 2 picked up the award at the Golden Globes against Big Hero 6, and The Boxtrolls which makes that the leader for this batch of films as well. The best film to combat the financially successful American films is The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Studio Ghibli creates some of the most interestingly animated feature films and this year is no different. Of this years nominees, Song of the Sea quickly became my favourite through the magical imagery that kept me enthralled.

The shocking snub of the year is The Lego Movie, the most successful animated film of the year. Perhaps academy voters felt it was too commercial, but by that logic putting a sequel into the nominees is out of place as well. There doesn’t seem to be any logical explanation for omitting such an entertaining film that both adults and children loved. If you’re looking for whimsical over commercial, then Kaguya is your shot, but otherwise the safe bet is Dragon.
