Oscars Nominations 2016 — First Thoughts

Standard

A full list of nominees can be found after the break, or on our collection page of all Academy Awards related posts.

The Academy Award nominations were released today at 5:30am, and the film with the most potential is The Revenant with 12 nominations, followed by Mad Max: Fury Road with 10. Harvey Weinstein isn’t in the Best Picture race this year, a bit of a shock since his films are masterfully pushed in almost every year. However, this might be due to Carol‘s lesbian subject matter, which the Academy may have disliked.

Although not a snub per-say, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was only nominated for the technical awards and left out of bigger categories like Best Picture. Did it deserve the nomination? Maybe not, but it has become the biggest box office movie and would grant the awards show a bigger audience.

Jennifer Lawrence was a surprise nomination, despite winning the Golden Globe for the same role. There were many other actresses expected into the category, like Alicia Vikander for Ex Machina, Helen Mirren for Trumbo or Women in Gold, and Kristen Stewart who gave a wonderful performance in the less well-known drama Clouds of Sils Maria. Lawrence is the youngest actress at 25 to receive four nominations, a feat Meryl Streep didn’t accomplish until 33.

Lastly, Netflix’s first motion picture of Beasts of No Nation didn’t manage to swing any nominations, despite actor Idris Elba’s support from the actors section of the Academy.

However, once again the concern is race. It’s a very white nominees list again, with all 20 acting noms going to white actors. Concussion‘s Will Smith, Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation, Benicio Del Toro of Sicario and Michael B Jordan from Creed were all receiving Oscars buzz prior to the announcement with expectations that Elba would make it onto the list. Even the Best Picture nominees have predominantly white casts and white leads, making these the least diverse Oscars in the past few years.
