The Revenant brought some big makeup to the competition this year. Every day, Leo DiCaprio had to sit for 5 hours of makeup application post-bear attack, and the specifics of bleeding, stitch-able wounds and scabs is really gross but impressive work. All of this and more combines to create a shocking, gruelling experience for the audience. Mad Max has a more inventive makeup experience, creating apocalyptic tribes of people reminiscent of many different groups, from the desert and familiar with scarification. Unfortunately, The Hundred-Year-Old Man doesn’t stand a chance in this category, reworking the technique of aging makeup like Benjamin Button and Jackass’ Bad Grandpa before it.
