Best Original Song

Sam Smith’s Writing’s on the Wall for Spectre sounds a lot like Adele’s Skyfall winner. That isn’t necessarily bad, since it fits perfectly with the movie and is the dramatic, cinematic type of song the Academy loves. Although Earned It fits into the Fifty Shades movie pretty well, the lyrics don’t work for where they are in the story. Lady Gaga’s Til It Happens to You is moving and quite possibly this year’s winner. She captures the emotion of the documentary The Hunting Ground, while still keeping the song pop enough to capture outsiders as well. She just won a Golden Globe, and now she might add Oscar to that list. It seems the days of unknown composers and artists winning this award are over.

  1. “Til It Happens to You” – The Hunting Ground
  2. “Writing’s on the Wall” – Spectre
  3. “Earned It” – Fifty Shades of Grey
  4. “Simple Song #3” – Youth
  5. “Manta Ray” – Racing Extinction
