Best Director is a Close Race

Standard

Opinion has been swinging back and forth on projected winners during award season this year, with the current choice seemingly between Mad Max‘s Miller and The Revenant‘s Iñárritu. But let’s take a step back and go through the process leading up to where we are now.

Iñárritu was a big winner and favourite early on, with the Golden Globes showing The Revenant likely to pick up for Actor, Director, and Picture. Since then, Miller has picked up popular support. He’s only won some of the smaller directorial awards so far, but with his first nomination at 70 years old and Iñárritu winning last year for Birdman, it seems like this could be his best chance.

Only Lenny Abrahamson for Room was left out at the Directors Guild Awards, and can mostly be out of the main competition here despite the critically acclaimed direction.

  1. George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road
  2. Alejandro G. Iñárritu – The Revenant
  3. Adam McKay – The Big Short
  4. Tom McCarthy – Spotlight
  5. Lenny Abrahamson – Room
