Oscars Debate: Best Picture

Standard

Much has been speculated about this year’s big winner at the Oscars, and people have been going back and forth on who they think will win. Here’s our breakdown of the top eight, and they they each have going for them.

Just like Boyhood last year, Spotlight is an early critic favourite. There’s a lot going against it though: it’s an indie film against box office powerhouses and studio films, and it’s a talkie. It might fall into the same early frontrunner dilemma of Boyhood, or it might still come out on top. It has picked up some awards, primarily SAG cast and Critics Choice, but it doesn’t look like it will win for Editing or Director.

Spotlight‘s biggest competition are The RevenantMad Max: Fury RoadThe Big Short, and The MartianThe Revenant picked up three big prizes at the Golden Globes, and the BAFTAs statuette too. It has the most nominations this year coming in at 12, and has a lot of hype. Iñárritu is a fantastic director, but he won for Director and Picture last year with Birdman and may not pull away another win so soon.

Mad Max: Fury Road has the second most nominations of the night, coming in at 10, and has a good chance to pick up wins in the Director and Film Editing awards, both big indicators of Best Picture greatness.

The Big Short got the PGA award, and has a good chance of picking up on Editing at this show. The PGA win is big, since that award has predicted the winner here 19 out of 25 times, and all six since adopting the same voting style as the Oscars.

Despite winning the comedy prize against the The Big Short at the Globes, The Martian doesn’t have much of a chance here. It isn’t nominated for Editing or Director, and seems to be way down in the ranks.

The other three, Brooklyn, Room, and Bridge of Spies, don’t seem likely to be strong contenders for the statue.

  1. The Revenant
  2. Spotlight
  3. Mad Max: Fury Road
  4. The Big Short
  5. The Martian
  6. Brooklyn
  7. Room
  8. Bridge of Spies
