Oscars 2016 – Best Costume Design

Just like in production design, going big brings a lot of votes your way in the costume category.

Our predictions and analysis are below:

Everything was really predictable this year in the costume category, focusing primarily on period pieces and musical numbers. This category can go to very different movies, ones that didn’t win much Oscar buzz or fanfare at the box office, but did produce some fantastic outfits.

Despite that, La La Land does have a good chance of winning here, from their calculated retro-realistic look that was full of colour and character definition. While watching I couldn’t help but notice the stylistic pieces in every scene, and how incredibly fitting they were at all times.

  1. Mary Zophres, “La La Land”
  2. Joanna Johnston, “Allied”
  3. Colleen Atwood, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”
  4. Madeline Fontaine, “Jackie”
  5. Consolata Boyle, “Florence Foster Jenkins”
