Top Five: JFL NorthWest comedy festival events

Vancouver’s comedy festival, JFL NorthWest, presented in association with SiriusXM, returns for a second year of mid-winter laughs from Thursday, February 16 to Saturday, February 25, 2017 at multiple venues across Vancouver.

Check below for my top five picks for the festival!

Trevor Noah – Thursday, February 23 | Queen Elizabeth Theatre | 7:00pm
Personally, I love Trevor Noah. He brings a unique worldview and global analysis of American culture to the forefront in all of his work. His comedy special on Netflix was great, and you can expect lots more like that during this night at the QE. He’s now the host of Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Daily Show and while people may reminisce about Jon Stewart’s time on that show, Noah has put out some great work there as well. His focused, measured critiques are bemused instead of indignant, and he’ll be great on his return to JFL NorthWest after last year’s wild success.

My Favorite Murder – Saturday, February 18 | Vogue Theatre | 10:00pm
You’ve heard me talk about this podcast before, most recently on my January podcast roundup, and I can’t wait to check out this live show of Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark’s popular podcast. Ready yourself for a murder adventure as two lifelong fans of true crime stories tell each other stories of murder. Then, we’ll get to hear hometown crime stories from audience members. Check your anxiety at the door, ‘cause Karen and Georgia are dying to discuss death.

The Alternative Show Hosted by Andy Kindler – February 24 & 25 | Rio Theatre | 10:30pm
The quintessential comic’s comic, Andy Kindler (Bob’s Burgers, Tosh. O) hosts the popular “Alternative Show” for two nights of alternative comedy anarchy. Off-the-wall and totally unpredictable, audiences won’t know what to expect. The only guarantee is that Andy will bring the house down with an all-star lineup of alt-comedy favourites for one of the Festival’s wildest events. Kindler is currently the host of Hulu’s Stand-up Series, Coming to the Stage, and is known for his yearly, infamous State of the Industry Address at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal.

Just For Laughs Showcase – February 21 at Biltmore Cabaret, 7pm | February 22 at Yuk Yuk’s, 8pm
Everyone loves Just for Laughs right? The bigwigs are in town and they’re looking for the next big thing. Check out the best of the best of local comedians as they try to impress the ones with the wigs.

Jim Gaffigan – Friday, February 24 | Queen Elizabeth Theatre | 7:00pm & 9:30pm
He’s a Grammy-nominated comedian, actor, New York Times best-selling author, top touring performer, and multi-platinum-selling father of five. He is known around the world for his unique brand of humour, which largely revolves around fatherhood and his observations on life and food. All four of Gaffigan’s comedy specials recently premiered on Netflix, and he is only one of ten comics in history to sell out Madison Square Garden.
