Best Animated Feature — 2018 Oscar Picks

This year provided some great animated movies, with one clear frontrunner. This is the first year with the larger voting pool of about 7,000 instead of just the animation branch, so it’ll be interesting to see if we get a ‘highbrow’ pick or something quite mainstream.

Disney Pixar’s contribution and frontrunner is Coco, the sweet, musical, Day of the Dead tale. Loving Vincent was a surprise box-office success this year with its beautiful visuals, all created from oil paintings inspired by Vincent Van Gogh. Although the story is relatively weak, it’s a beautiful film that could likely pull a swath of voters.

The Breadwinner is one of my favourites of the year, based on a beautiful story written by a Canadian author from when I was growing up about a little girl who has to become the breadwinner of her family in Afghanistan. The Boss Baby and Ferdinand are cute stories, but I don’t see any chance of those picking up the statuette.

  1. Coco
  2. Loving Vincent
  3. The Breadwinner
  4. The Boss Baby
  5. Ferdinand
