Craving Some Entertainment: Big Little Lies

With classes done for the semester, I can finally sink into a summer of reading, watching movies, and catching up on all those great shows I’ve missed in the past few years. CraveTV is the perfect subscription service for that since they have so many great series from HBO, Showtime, and more. Let’s get watching!

Big Little Lies was one of the big hits of 2017 and I finally got around to watching it a few months ago. It immediately became one of my favourites and I can’t wait for the second season to come out in 2019 (with Meryl Streep, no less!). Lies is set in a picturesque California town. On the surface, everything seems perfect, but underneath there are secrets, rivalries, and murder.

With a cast of incredible, powerful women it’s no wonder this show provides some substantial, intensely driven female characters you can’t help but love. The friendship and camaraderie of the women, as well as their feuds, all have such depth and feel incredibly real. It’s hard to find a flimsy storyline in this show.

I loved the slow development of the stories, instead of immediately throwing everything at the audience we were allowed to settle into this town and these lives, gradually creating an idea of each character’s life before that gets ripped away.

Witherspoon got to utilize the sunny disposition she’s cultivated so well in her career while adding more depth and punctuating this with her lies and grudges. Kidman handles herself well in long, quiet scenes with her therapist. Here, they really delve into the intricacies of her struggle with an abusive husband. Skarsgard, who plays her husband, is masterful in his villainous role as well.
