Sunday Reading: Depression and Other Magic Tricks by Sabrina Benaim

The next book I picked up was Depression and Other Magic Tricks by Sabrina Benaim, another book of poetry that captures the emotions of young adulthood and expresses the raw loneliness of depression.Depression and Other Magic TricksSabrina Benaim is a Canadian writer, performance and teaching artist. She was a member of the Canadian championship-winning 2014 Toronto Poetry Slam team, & in 2015, she represented Toronto at the Women Of The World Poetry Slam.

Benaim manages to describe small daily moments of depressionIMG_1173 and loneliness, such as in ‘The Loneliest Sweet Potato’ or ‘Single’. She also manages to catch all of the struggles and triumphs of mental health, and the difficul and sometimes hopeless feeling when those around you don’t understand, such as in ‘Explaining Depression to My Mother’.

You can find Depression and Other Magic Tricks at button poetry or in person at Chapters.
