VAMSO ends season with A John Williams Tribute

The Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra  (VAMSO) ends its season with a tour de force finale of riveting film scores in A John Williams Tribute, May 7, 2017, 2pm at the Orpheum Theatre. This homage to the maestro of the movies will feature Williams’ epic and gripping works from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Indiana Jones, Catch Me If You Can, and more performed by VAMSO under the baton of conductor Kathleen Allan.

Oscars 2016 – Best Visual Effects

Visual effects are used in films to produce imagery not possible while producing the shot. CGI (computer generated imagery) receives most awards in this category at present. Films that create new techniques are normally set to win the award, however this year there wasn’t anything groundbreaking like that.

Oscars 2016 – Best Sound Mixing

The process of sound mixing is taking all the different sounds needed in a scene and putting them together so they are at the right time and volume. The elements needed to meld together for most scenes are dialogue, background noise, and score, however some films will have a focus on music or special effects.

This year we have two war movies, 13 Hours and Hacksaw Ridge, a new Star Wars movie Rogue One, a musical in La La Land, and an extraterrestrial first-contact film Arrival. A lot of people were predicting Doctor Strange to get some love here but instead Marvel missed out entirely. Instead, complete underdog 13 Hours got a nomination… and I honestly forgot that movie even existed until seeing it on this list.
